Most shareholder communication only goes one way.
Announcements go out, the annual report goes out, and then there's silence. Without a way to hear back, companies find out what shareholders think at the AGM, or in the share price.
- 01
The top 20 get all the attention
Time goes to the largest holders, while thousands of smaller shareholders never hear from the company directly.
- 02
No feedback loop
You can see what you sent, but not who read it, what they thought or whether it changed anything.
- 03
Silence between announcements
Shareholders hear from you when the rules require it. In between, their view of the company is shaped by others.

What is shareholder engagement?
Shareholder engagement is the ongoing two-way relationship between a listed company and its shareholders. It covers how the company keeps shareholders informed, how it listens to their questions and concerns, and how it uses what it learns. Good engagement builds trust and a loyal register that holds through the ups and downs.
What are shareholder engagement best practices?
Communicate with the whole register, not only the largest holders. Keep in touch between mandatory announcements, explain news in plain language, answer questions openly so every shareholder gets the same answer, and measure what shareholders read and do. Treat engagement as a regular habit rather than something that happens around results and the AGM.
What's the difference between shareholder relations and investor relations?
Shareholder relations, sometimes called stockholder relations, focuses on the people who already own shares. Investor relations is broader: it also includes prospective investors, analysts and the wider market. In practice the two overlap, because today's prospects are tomorrow's shareholders.
How do you communicate with shareholders between announcements?
Share the context around the business: project updates, site visits, management interviews, webinar recordings and answers to common questions. None of it should contain new price-sensitive information, which always goes to the market first. Sending these by email and posting them on your investor hub keeps shareholders close without waiting for the next release.
