I have been having more conversations recently with our learned friends in the Nordics.

They are politely baffled by the British boardroom - executives and non-executives around one table, jointly responsible for everything. In Denmark, for example, executive and non-executives sit on different boards.

We treat the unitary board as a strength of UK governance. We also have a well-documented problem: our public companies are deeply risk-averse. I wonder whether the two are connected…
